22,000 Tons is a multi-media sculpture that represents the amount of waste dumped in Love Canal, Niagara Falls from the 1940's through the 1970's. The immediate neighborhood was evacuated and the waste in the canal was contained, but the waste that leached out was never cleaned up. The neighborhood is once again inhabited and deemed safe by the government, yet private testing has proven that people continue to be poisoned in the surrounding neighborhoods inside of their homes by the waste that was never cleaned up. No one really knows how far the waste from Love Canal has traveled as it connects to the Niagara River and moves unseen underground.
